Solar Cookers
A solar cooker is a highly insulated box with a glass covering at the top and a reflector(s) which directs the sun?s rays into the cooking compartment. It converts light energy from the sun into heat energy through the use of reflection and the greenhouse effect principles. The heat is then used to prepare meals.
On average, it costs about KShs. 15 in firewood value to prepare a meal of maize and beans for a family of six. This meal is quite popular with the residents of Central parts of Kenya as well as famine relief distribution centers across the country. For a family that eats this type of meal once a day, three times a week, they spend at least KShs. 45 per week or KShs. 2350 per year on fuel for one particular type of meal. Although this amount might not be too high, when translated into the number of trees/forest cover lost and given the number of families involved, it is no wonder our country is rapidly turning into a desert. SOLAR WORLD is offering an alternative to rapid forest destruction by way of a solar cooker which consumes no firewood and delivers the energy required to make meals at an affordable cost.
What are the advantages of solar cookers?
- It saves on trees that would otherwise have been cut down to supply fuel.
- It saves time and money that would have been spent in search of firewood.
- It does not produce smoke or particulate matter while in use. This prevents respiratory problems associated with smoke from firewood.
- It is highly portable and can be used wherever the sun shines.
